Queensland is doubling down on its reputation as one of the country’s most attractive holiday destinations, with new research suggesting the qualities Australians value most in partners may not just live in a person – but in a place.

New YouGov research, conducted online on behalf of Tourism and Events Queensland, found the Sunshine Coast was one of the state’s leading ‘suitors’ when it comes to the qualities Australians value most; loyalty (46 per cent), kindness (45 per cent) and authenticity (48 per cent). Those preferences are mirrored in their domestic travel choices.

Nearly two-thirds of Australians (64 per cent) say their ideal getaway takes place outdoors – from beaches and rainforests to waterfalls and wide-open spaces.

Seven-in-ten (72 per cent) are most attracted to “low-key adventure” experiences, favouring relaxed, spontaneous exploration over high-adrenaline itineraries.

Dining and drinks (32 per cent), regional road trips (33 per cent), markets (23 per cent) and cultural experiences (23 per cent) are among the most appealing activities.

The research reinforces that Australians are prioritising meaningful, low-pressure travel experiences grounded in nature, connection and balance – making the Sunshine Coast a perfect match.

Tourism operators in the region said the appeal lied in its consistency and liveability.

For co-owners of Narrows Escape, Ali and Xochi Khan, a visit to the region turned into a long-term commitment.

“We came to the Sunshine Coast on holiday and completely fell for the hinterland’s calm and creative way of offering endless possibilities,” Mrs Khan said.

Narrows Escape at Montville was once named TripAdvisor’s number one romantic hotel in the world.

Mr Khan said the region continued to convert short stays into return visits.

“There’s a warmth to the Sunshine Coast – the people, the pace, the lifestyle – where you feel quietly confident in building something unrushed, but meaningful,” he said.
