A long-standing waterfront club is making the bold move to remove gaming as part of its upgrade plans.
The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club at Lions Park, Noosaville, is preparing to close for three weeks from February 2 as it undertakes the major renovations.
Along with the removal of the gaming room and some office space to provide a larger sports bar, the main bar – which has been in place since the current clubhouse opened in 1994 – will be rebuilt.
The toilets will also be upgraded, along with new furniture throughout and improved air conditioning capacity.
General manager Ashley Little said in a club newsletter last month that the move away from gambling would benefit the community.
“Around 10 years ago, the club’s management committee foresaw a future in which the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club could become a leading example of reducing harm without impacting the level of support the club provides to the community,” he said.

“Well, we are very excited to announce that this vision will become a reality through the renovation of the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.
“The most significant part of the renovation: the removal of the gaming room and all forms of gambling.
“Approximately 18 months ago, the club removed Keno from the venue. This was the first stage of transforming the club into a non-gambling venue.
“In December 2024, the club became non-smoking, as part of the full transition to a gaming and smoke-free venue.”

The update said the club would also launch a new website, social media platforms and live viewing camera of the Noosa River to coincide with the renovations.
“Unlike some venues that renovate and raise drink prices, the club will instead increase its member discounts and promotions and, at the same time, expand its product range,” Mr Little said.
“This is the largest investment the club has made since its inception, and we can’t wait for the result, which will be completed by the team at Build4U Coolum.

“Whilst the reopening date cannot be confirmed at this stage, the club expects to reopen no later than Monday, February 23.”
The club website says it has a history dating back to the 1950s.
Originally known as the Noosa River Sailing Club, it first opened its clubhouse in September 1961 and evolved into the Noosa Yacht Club.
The Noosa Rowing Club was founded in 1981 and the need for a clubhouse resulted in the incorporation of the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club in February 1984.
The current clubhouse was opened in April 1994.
“Since then the club has thrived, with membership expanding and programs developing, including Queensland’s premier children’s sailing program and a highly regarded Sailability initiative, making it a prominent part of the Noosa community,” it says.
