The design contract for a major interchange upgrade has been awarded as the state government ramps up its congestion-busting plan for a busy Sunshine Coast town.

Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd will start design work on the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road interchange at Caloundra next year.

Key features of the intersection upgrade include: construction of new north-south bridges over Caloundra Road, connecting Kawana Way Link Road to Bells Creek Arterial Road for uninterrupted traffic flow; the addition of extra lanes on Caloundra Road at both new ramp intersections; and enhanced active transport facilities that should improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

Geotechnical investigations, surveys and traffic modelling have already taken place, to inform the design of the new intersection and overpass.

The interchange is one of the key election commitments aimed at delivering easing traffic gridlock in the area.

The five projects that are in the Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan, including the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road interchange.

The Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan is expected to reduce congestion, boost capacity at key intersections, create additional connections to the Caloundra CBD and improve traffic flow, travel times and safety for road users.

Member for Caloundra Kendall Morton said better roads and junctions were on the way.

“More than 46,000 vehicles travel on the Caloundra Road corridor every day, with at least a 30 per cent increase in traffic in the past two decades, and we are doing something to fix this congestion,” she said.

“We are getting on with the job of delivering this project.

“Huge progress has been made this year to get us to this point and I look forward to seeing the designs completed next year and for the community to have their say during that process.”
