An award-winning hospitality family has swapped Brisbane’s inner city for the Sunshine Coast, taking the reins of one of Maroochydore’s most elegant dining destinations.

Sarah and Biagio Biuso, along with their son Joseph, have taken over Bottarga in the Maroochydore city centre, bringing with them more than 27 years of culinary experience.

The Biusos are well known in Queensland’s dining scene, having owned and operated a string of successful Italian and degustation restaurants across the state.

Their most acclaimed venture, mobile fine dining restaurant Da Biuso, earned an Australian Good Food Guide chef’s hat and two glasses in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards.

After nearly a decade living in Brisbane, Mrs Biuso said the family was ready for a change of pace and scenery.

“After living in Brisbane for nine years, we were really ready for a sea change and thought that Maroochydore, being the hub and centre of the Sunshine Coast, was very appealing as we have everything we need here and more,” she said.

“Funnily enough, as soon as we moved here (from Clayfield in Brisbane’s inner north), we were busy unpacking our apartment and decided to head out for a meal and we arrived at Bottarga Restaurant. We were very impressed by the beautiful decor; friendly, welcoming service; and central location.

“After living in Maroochydore for around six months, we started looking for a new restaurant location and when Bottarga came up on our radar, we were sold.”

Mrs Biuso said diners at Bottarga could look forward to a continuation of the restaurant’s refined style combined with the family’s culinary creativity.

“Diners can expect the same beautiful, elegant decor and ambience along with warm, welcoming, professional service with a focus on fine food,” she said.

“We are offering a large and creative menu selection from Joseph and Biagio, and an award-winning wine and drinks list curated and managed by myself, who is the restaurant sommelier.

“We change our menus regularly and offer three separate degustation and banquet menus that customers can dine from.

“Joseph and Biagio are well known for their fresh handmade pastas, creative and unique degustation dishes and also their seafood dishes.”

Joseph Biuso works alongside his family in the kitchen of Bottarga.

The family is committed to using fresh, high-quality ingredients and showcasing local produce wherever possible.

“We are very passionate about using local food and wine suppliers, particularly here on the Sunshine Coast, and will look to do events and collaborations with as many local suppliers as we can,” Mrs Biuso said.

She said the family hoped to make Maroochydore their permanent home.

“Our short-term goals are to establish ourselves here in this bustling new CBD precinct and our long-term goals are to build and grow this business and to hopefully make Maroochydore our forever home,” she said.

“We really feel that each new venture is an opportunity to keep learning and to keep improving our offerings. We are all highly motivated to bring the absolute best food and wines to our customers, which is why we put a lot of time into working in our restaurants and also behind the scenes to create new dishes, new cocktails and wine lists.”

Bottarga by Da Biuso is at 1 Mundoo Boulevard and opens Tuesday to Saturday from 11.30am until late.
