A $4.2 million project is expected to improve safety and traffic flow at a pivotal intersection close to two large estates.

Stage 4 of the Camp Flat Road upgrade program will include a revamp of the Whitecross Road junction, which is essentially a gateway for Parklakes 1 and 2 at Bli Bli.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the works would be crucial.

“It is a key infrastructure project aimed at improving safety and accessibility for the growing Bli Bli community,” they said.

The skewed T-intersection is the main southern entry and exit point for the expansive Parklakes developments. It is on a rise surrounded by trees and features a sharp bend.

The Stage 4 works are expected to deliver a range of enhancements at the intersection including road widening and dedicated turning lanes, a new roundabout to improve traffic flow, upgraded road lighting and stormwater drainage, bicycle lanes and a pedestrian footpath, and construction of three retaining walls to support the new road design.

Significant improvements are planned for the intersection along Camp Flat Road.

“These improvements were identified by council’s Transport Infrastructure Management branch following road safety audits, which identified key areas of required safety improvements and are exacerbated by the increased traffic volumes,” the spokesperson said.

Construction is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2026 and will take about 10 months to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

“The works will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption, maintain access to local properties and reduce the need for road closures,” the spokesperson said.

“Detours will be clearly signed and will make use of existing corridors including Yandina-Bli Bli Road, Bli Bli Road and Whitecross Road, where available.”

The Stage 4 works, funded by the council and the state government, are part of a broader upgrade program for Camp Flat Road.

Stage 5 was completed in 2021, covering the 300m section between 109 and 145 Camp Flat Road.

Future stages (1 to 3) are planned and will focus on the Francis Road intersection, the 450m link between Francis Road and Whitecross Road and the 550m southern connection to Bli Bli Road.

Plans for stages 1 to 4 include more roundabouts, improved drainage and sight lines, wider lanes and enhanced pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

“Council thanks the community for their ongoing support and patience as we continue to invest in safer, more efficient transport infrastructure for our region,” the spokesperson said.

Sunshine Coast News has reached out to the Bli Bli Community Association for comment. The group is scheduled to have a meeting on Tuesday, August 19, when the upgrades are likely to be discussed.
