More than 15,000 runners will hit the pavement for this year’s EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival on Sunday, but it’s the course itself that’s making history.

For the first time, the event will feature a single-lap route, offering a fast, flat and picturesque circuit along the coast.

The route is expected to be perfect for chasing personal bests and course records as the countdown continues to 2032, when the Sunshine Coast will host Olympic and Paralympic marathon events.

Runners will start at Alexandra Headland and head to Mudjimba and back. Other events will include a half-marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km.

Among the headline participants are two of Australia’s most recognisable sports legends: NRL great Jonathan Thurston and AFL icon Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin.

They will take on the McDonald’s Half Marathon as part of their preparation with the Indigenous Marathon Foundation for the New York City Marathon later this year.

The marathon course follows the coastline for several kilometres.

Atlas Events managing director Jason Crowther said this year’s edition was shaping up to be the biggest and most exciting in the event’s 13-year history.

“The new single-lap marathon course showcases the very best of the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“It’s fast, flat and incredibly scenic: ideal for first-timers and serious marathoners alike.

“We’re thrilled to welcome runners from around the globe and proud to see the community rally behind our charity partners.”

Sunshine Coast local Megan Murphy will be among those lining up in the event, with the race taking on special significance.

Ms Murphy and 45 of her family, friends and colleagues are paying tribute to her brother Benny, who was lost to a mental health crisis and alcoholism two years ago.

She is turning her grief into a powerful force for community good by raising funds for Mentoring Men, a free service connecting men with trained, local male mentors.

“Ben and I had talked about doing the half-marathon event together in the past, and I guess that stayed with me. The event is also nestled between the anniversary of Ben’s passing in July and his birthday in August,” she said.

“These dates can be harrowing in terms of grief, so I thought this event could be the rose between the thorns, or the light amongst the shadows for my family and myself.

“But most importantly I wanted to create a positive experience and lasting message for my nephews, Harry and Arlo; for them to see and experience how communities can come together, and help forge a new path for men and their mental health; to create a better future for them and ultimately for everyone.

“I love that Mentoring Men are forward thinking and they have a different approach to what I’ve seen. They’ve trained mentors locally and they’re relatable men just having a chat encouraging open conversations. I just feel like that’s what could have worked for my brother. It would have been a lifeline for him, and so that resonates with me.”

Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli said the running festival complemented the region.

“This year’s record-breaking participation reflects the Sunshine Coast’s growing reputation as a premier destination for sport and lifestyle,” she said.

“We’re proud to support an event that not only inspires thousands to achieve their personal best but also gives back so generously to our community.

“This year, we also welcome the Indigenous Marathon Foundation and its inspiring ambassadors, including sporting legends Jonathan Thurston and Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin. Their presence brings a powerful message of resilience, leadership and unity, and highlights the transformative impact of running in connecting people to Country, culture and community.”

The Sunshine Coast will host the marathon events at the 2032 Games.

“While the final course for 2032 is yet to be confirmed, one thing is certain, our stunning environment and vibrant community will be showcased to the world, inspiring visitors to experience the Sunshine Coast for themselves,” Cr Natoli said.

The festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast Council through the Major Events Sponsorship Program.
