Early planning is underway for a long-awaited upgrade to a section of the Sunshine Motorway, with site investigations fast-tracked to pave the way for new ramps.
The project is aimed at easing congestion, improving safety and providing an additional access point along a stretch of road that carries more than 31,000 vehicles daily, near Mount Coolum.
The state government has committed to deliver south-facing ramps to the motorway at West Coolum Road.
The site investigations represent the first step to inform planning and design for upgrades, and include detailed topographical, environmental and geotechnical surveys.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the ramps would be of significant benefit.
“The project will support a future connection with Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed South Coolum Road Link project, ultimately providing an additional motorway access along this highly-trafficked section of motorway,” he said. “It is vital these projects are aligned for delivery as much as possible.”
“Traffic volumes are expected to increase as the Sunshine Coast continues to grow.
“These site investigations are an integral part of planning for future upgrades to ultimately improve traffic flow, travel-time reliability and safety on our roads.”
The state government is developing the project scope and timelines for the ramps.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the ramps would alleviate traffic jams.
“This major $40 million milestone will help divert through traffic off David Low Way and back onto the Sunshine Motorway, reducing the number of cars at existing choke points, as well as relieving pressure on dangerous local roads such as Toolga Street and Tanah Street West,” she said.
Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie said there was “light at the end of the tunnel” for people who use the section of the motorway every day but commuters could be temporarily impacted by works.
“We know to expect disruptions and I thank drivers in advance for their patience,” he said.
“The next step in delivering the broader plan to bust congestion is, of course, the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway between David Low Way and Yandina-Coolum Road to improve efficiency, capacity and safety.
“This planning includes provision for a grade-separated interchange at Yandina-Coolum Road and an active transport pathway.”
Motorists have been urged to allow additional travel time while site investigations are underway due to changed traffic conditions that will be in place for motorists and roadworker safety.
