A new district-level recreation park is set to feature a large slide, lookout and mountain bike course.

Sunshine Coast Council has developed a draft concept plan for the Maleny District Park: a multi-staged development that’s subject to future budget approvals.

Councillor Winston Johnston said the park would “complement the other recreation offerings” in the area.

“The new district park will be a place for our community to come and enjoy the outdoors together as they experience all that our vibrant town centre and surrounds have to offer,” he said.

The district park could include four distinct areas.

The Lookout, along North Maleny Road, is expected to be an ideal location to take in the views across the precinct with a viewing spot and picnic facilities proposed.

The Bails, near the old Fairview Milking Bails, proposes a small playground, open lawn area and several picnic locations, which could be a space for gathering during the day or to view the stars at night.

The Hill, next to Cloudwalk Estate, would take advantage of the natural topography of the area with a proposed mountain bike skills course, a mega slide and viewing places over the wetlands and forest.

The Hub, to the south of The Hill, is proposed to be the key activity area with a toilet block, fenced dog exercise area, large kick and throw space, barbecue picnic facilities, multi-sports courts and a large basket swing.

Cr Johnston said the areas would be connected by an expanded footpath and trail network and, ultimately, car parking.

“We have designed each space to enhance its natural features while integrating the valuable ideas contributed by our community,” he said.

“Now we’re seeking feedback on the draft concept plan to ensure we’ve got it right for those who live, work and play here.”

People can provide feedback on the plan via the Have your Say Sunshine Coast website. There will also be a pop-up session from 9am to 1pm on May 24, outside Queensland Country Bank in Maple Street.

Community engagement will close at 5pm on June 1. The final concept plan will then be shared with the community in late 2025.
