A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after a swimming incident in a river.

The female was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, by the Sunshine Coast-based LifeFlight aeromedical crew, on Sunday afternoon.

It is believed she struck her head on a sandbank while swimming in the Noosa River.

The LifeFlight crew was tasked to the scene, near the mouth of the river, at 4.20pm.

She was taken to shore where the LifeFlight critical care doctor and a Queensland Ambulance Service flight paramedic, with local QAS paramedics, treated her for suspected back and neck injuries.

She was then airlifted to hospital in Brisbane for further treatment.
