A new ferry service on the Sunshine Coast is quickly expanding its area of operations.

The Mooloolaba Ferry launched in early November, with four stops on a route along the Kawana Waters Canal and Mooloolah River, including one docking point that was added at the last minute.

They are the Kawana Hotel, Pier 33, The Wharf Mooloolaba and La Balsa Park.

There will be a fifth stop from Thursday, December 6: the iconic Mooloolah River Fisheries (MRF) jetty.

Ferry co-owner Darren Smith was delighted that the 52-passenger boat could go there during its several-times-a-day trips.

“We (the owners of the ferry) have been in negotiations with the fisheries, and we’re excited to announce that we’re adding MRF to our permanent schedule,” he said.

The ferry service’s updated route.

“We’re interested to see the response from everyone with the fisheries stop.

“It (fishing) is a major industry on the Sunshine Coast and we boast some of the best seafood in Australia.”

The region’s first regular ferry service was expected to bolster tourism and public transport in the region.

Mr Smith said many passengers had jumped on board during the business’ first few weeks of operation.

“The numbers of travellers are going well,” he said.

“There were over 50 cross-river hoppers from the La Balsa stop last Saturday.

“Kawana Hotel day tickets are also selling well with people just sometimes jumping on for the experience on the old Brisbane ferry.
