The 41st edition of a world-famous triathlon is set to take place this weekend, when key roads will be closed for racing.

The Noosa Triathlon, which attracts more than 8000 competitors and their supporters to the tourist town, will be held on Sunday morning. It will feature a 1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run.

A five-day festival of events will also include opportunities for up to 5000 more people of all ages and abilities to be involved.

Some of the region’s main roads and car parks will be closed, mostly on Sunday, including Noosa Parade, Hastings Street, Weyba Road, Gympie Terrace, Hilton Terrace, Cooroy-Noosa Road and Eumundi Road. Shuttle buses will operate.

The IRONMAN Group Oceania regional director Leanna Ali said excitement was building ahead of this year’s event, which is expected to inject around $35 million into the Queensland economy.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming the triathlon world back to Noosa again this week for the 41st running of the Garmin Noosa Triathlon,” she said.

“Over the years, the Noosa Triathlon has become a bucket list event for triathletes from around the world and we can’t wait to welcome a sold-out field to Sunday’s event once again.

“From its humble beginnings more than 40 years ago to becoming the largest Olympic-distance triathlon in the world, the Noosa Triathlon has a special place in Australian sporting history and we look forward to adding another chapter to it this year.

“With swims, runs, rides, kids’ events and the Special Triathlon, there is an event for everybody to be a part of and we look forward to welcoming those from abroad, and the local community, to the event this year.”

Tourism Noosa CEO Sharon Raguse welcomed athletes and their supporters.

The triathlon route extends west along closed roads to Cooroy (red line). There is a shuttle bus (pink line).

“As the destination partner, we are excited to host Noosa’s most iconic sporting event, which has been a part of Noosa’s DNA for over 40 years,” she said.

“There’s truly no better way to experience our beautiful region than by swimming Laguna Bay, running along our scenic tropical paths, and cycling through the stunning hinterland.

“With an exciting array of events for all ages and fitness levels, we wish every participant the best of luck in their competition.”
