Residents are calling for speed bumps to be installed in a suburban street after a reported increase in “rat running” though the area.

The network of streets is tucked behind Noosa Junction between Noosa Drive, Leslie Drive and Coyar Street.

A petition containing 23 signatures has been lodged with Noosa Council calling for street-calming devices, or speed bumps, along Allambi Terrace at Noosa Heads.

The petition seeks for the speed bumps to be installed along the street between Toulambi Street and Winbirra Way.

Two speed bumps are already in place on Allambi Terrace between Noosa Drive and the intersection of Arkana Drive and Toulambi Street.

The petition stated there had been a noticeable increase of in traffic flow and speed along Allambi Terrace.

“It’s been observed that many of the vehicle are not locals but rat runners,” it stated.

“Our major concern is the welfare and safety of residents of Cooloola Estate and especially Allambi Terrace.”

The petition also noted a high number of walkers, including those with dogs, families with small children and school students catching buses.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the difficulty of making a right or left turn out of Arkana Drive onto Leslie Drive, with the petition calling for safety measures to be installed at the t-intersection.

“While talking to residents in Allambi Terrace regarding the use of traffic calming in our street, which they are in full support of, another issue has been a regular subject of concern and discussion. Turning right or left from Arkana Street into Leslie Drive has drivers on edge,” the petition stated.

“The speed at which vehicles are approaching the Arkana Street/Leslie Drive t-intersection from the RACV (Noosa Resort) roundabout gives little time to make a split-second decision on whether to proceed or not.

“Installation of a mirror on Leslie Drive for drivers to view vehicles approaching this intersection would very much improve safety (and) possibly more prominent signage for informing drivers there is a t-intersection ahead.”

Sunshine Coast News asked Noosa Council if further comment could be provided on any known traffic issues along the street, including “rat running”, and if there was scope to address areas of concerns, such as installing speed bumps.

Noosa Council responded that the petition had been received for the CEO to determine an appropriate action and that nothing more could be said at this time.
