The brakes have been put on motorists along several well-used Sunshine Coast roads.
Reduced speed limits have been introduced at locations around the region – including stretches of busy David Low Way and on Bradman Avenue – during the past few months.
A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the changes were implemented after thorough reviews.
“Speed limits are set following a detailed engineering assessment that considers a range of factors including the function of the road, adjacent development, construction standard of the road, prevailing traffic speeds and crash history,” they said.
“When a review of a posted speed limit is undertaken, the recommendations are tabled at a meeting of the Speed Management Committee for deliberation and endorsement.”
That committee includes representatives from Sunshine Coast Council, the Queensland Police Service and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
The speed has been reduced from 60kmh to 50kmh at the following locations:
- The section of Bli Bli Road between the roundabouts at David Low Way and Willis Road.
- The section of David Low Way at Bli Bli between Muller Park Road and about 100 metres south of the roundabout with Bli Bli Road.
- The section of David Low Way at Coolum Beach, between Scrub Road and just south of Mona Vista Court intersection.
- The section of Bradman Avenue, Beach Road and Duporth Avenue at Maroochydore between the intersection with Ocean Street and just east of the intersection with Fishermans Road.
- The section of Yandina-Coolum Road between the Sunshine Motorway and David Low Way, including Beach Road at Coolum Beach.
Speed limit changes can be made in response to requests for speed limit reviews.
Those requests can be made by local government authorities, TMR, community members or police.
The reduced speed limit on a section of David Low Way at Bli Bli, where a 12-year-old-boy was fatally struck by a vehicle last year, was implemented in response to a request for a speed limit review. TMR did not say who requested that review.
