Two new trucks are set to boost firefighting capacity on the southern Sunshine Coast, after they rolled into the region last week.
The Type 3 appliances, worth $1.15 million each, will be based at the Caloundra and Caloundra South Fire and Rescue stations.
The Type 3 is regarded as a jack-of-all-trades appliance, enabling firefighters to tackle structural, petrol, chemical and grass fires.
The combination of a 1500L water tank and 4500L-a-minute pump with a foam injection system means firefighters can respond more efficiently to emergencies.
Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said the trucks were vital additions.
“We know firefighters from Caloundra and Caloundra South Fire and Rescue Stations do world-class job on the frontline to keep Queenslanders safe,” he said.
“(The) new workhorse appliances … mean firefighters will be safer while doing lifesaving work.
“These Type 3 appliances deliver peace-of-mind for the southern Sunshine Coast community and ensure firefighters have the right tools for the job.”
Minister for Fire and Disaster Recovery Nikki Boyd said local crews would be better resourced.
“Delivering the keys to these new, high-tech Type 3 appliances strengthens the southern Sunshine Coast’s frontline response capability to fire emergencies,” she said.
The state government is rolling out $44.9 million in firefighting appliances across Queensland.
Caloundra station now has two pumpers (water delivering trucks), a breathing apparatus and hazmat support appliance and a 4×4 vehicle.
The relatively new Caloundra South station has the one new pumper.
QFR acting assistant commissioner Kevin Reading said the new fit-for-purpose appliances would help keep Sunshine Coast communities safe.
“With an increased demand on emergency services it’s important to have a contemporary fleet for our firefighters,” he said.
“These appliances are a great asset for Caloundra’s two busy fire and rescue stations, and the crews have been training and familiarising themselves with the appliance in preparation for incidents.”
