The planned commencement of work on the $148 million upgrade of the Sunshine Coast Stadium has been delayed.
Preliminary works for the upgrade were set to get underway within the next few months, but Sunshine Coast Council has revealed early works are now expected to start towards the end of next year.
“Due to a delay in awarding the construction delivery contract, the Sunshine Coast Stadium will remain open for another 12 months, with early works now expected to start from mid to late 2025,” a council spokesperson said.
The stadium upgrade will deliver improved facilities for players, match officials and spectators, with seating increased from 1046 to 10,680.
It is being funded by the federal and state governments, with the council to contribute $17 million.
The expanded Bokarina venue will host football preliminaries during the 2032 Olympic Games.

The council spokesperson said it was hoped the contract would be awarded after this month’s state election.
“We are hopeful the contract will be awarded swiftly at the end of the Queensland Government caretaker period, ensuring the stadium will be delivered ahead of the 2028 winter sports season,” they said.
“While the delay is disappointing, it does mean the stadium can continue to operate as the premier venue for sport, leisure, and entertainment on the Sunshine Coast. Importantly, it will host another season of rugby league before construction starts in mid-late 2025.
“Council remains focused on working with the Games Venue and Legacy Delivery Authority to deliver a world-class stadium for our community.
“Council received positive community feedback when the funding and designs were announced for the upgraded Sunshine Coast Stadium and new indoor sports centre in May this year. We look forward to the designs for both venues progressing to delivery phase as soon as possible.
“Procurement for the new indoor sports centre continues to occur separately from the stadium, with contract award expected in 2025.”
The Sunshine Coast Falcons took to social media to share their excitement at being able to continue using their home ground for another year.
“Due to a delay in the stadium redevelopment the Vantage Building Group Falcons will now play our entire 2025 season at Sunshine Coast Stadium,” they posted.
“We can’t wait to see all of our season members, sponsors and supporters back at Sunshine Coast Stadium in 2025!”
