A community garden has sprouted in one of the Sunshine Coast’s fastest-growing areas, and scores of locals are ready to dig in and help it flourish.
The Harmony Palmview Community Garden, at master-planned Harmony in Palmview, will become a reality thanks to a grant awarded by the estate’s developer AVID Property Group and Sunshine Coast Council to create a biodiverse garden for residents to enjoy.
Harmony Palmview Community Garden Group’s Emma Miles said the initiative would foster a strong sense of community through shared activities, and provide educational opportunities on gardening, sustainability and healthy living.
“The garden is all about creating connection amongst our members, as well as growing and having access to fresh produce to save a trip to the shops,” she said.
“The program has been a big work in progress, so it is fantastic to have assistance from community grants like this to support and kick start the program.
“We have already had more than 260 community members express interest in joining the garden group and we can’t wait to see the garden and the community we create flourish.”
AVID general manager Queensland Anthony Demiris said Harmony had a history of supporting grassroot initiatives.
“We are looking forward to seeing the garden, quite literally, come to life as a community led project that embodies many of the values we care about, including sustainability and healthy living,” he said.
“Our community grants not only provide vital financial assistance but help to develop resilient, adaptive, and vibrant communities, and this new garden will leave a legacy for all current and future Harmony residents to enjoy.”
AVID provided $10,000 for pumps and $2500 for a garden shed.
Sunshine Coast councillor and Harmony resident Christian Dickson said council was delighted to assist in the delivery of the garden, which should be a beneficial and educational initiative for locals.
“Seeing people out and about in the community enjoying our wonderful local parks is fantastic to see and should continue to be encouraged,” he said.
AVID Property Group’s $3 billion Harmony project is set on 378 hectares and will include more than 4800 homes for 13,000 residents.
