Sunshine Coast Council is assessing opportunities to create another holiday park.

Its 2024-25 budget includes $150,000 for a “new holiday park concept design, Bli Bli”.

A council spokesperson said the project was in its infancy.

“Council is currently in the early stages of investigating opportunities for a future holiday park in the Bli Bli area,” they said.

“Depending on the outcome of the investigations, we look forward to sharing the outcome with our community when more details become available.”

Sunshine Coast News asked for more information and was informed that council was looking to expand its holiday parks offerings.

A council-operated holiday park at Mudjimba Beach.

“Sunshine Coast Council operates six holiday parks, all situated in coastal locations,” the spokesperson said.

“We aim to diversify this offering with expansion of the network into a rural-based tourism offering.

“Initial planning involved a site within the locality of Bli Bli on the northern side of the Maroochy River, as part of a land parcel acquisition for future sport and recreation purposes.

“Earlier investigations deemed this site as unfeasible.

“Council set aside $150,000 in the 2024-25 Capital Works Plan for initial investigations on other potential sites that will offer this diversity in the holiday park network.

“Depending on the outcome of the investigations, we look forward to sharing the outcome with our community when more details become available.”

Bli Bli Community Association president Chris Baker told SCN that locals should be involved in the process.

“There should be consultation with the community before they go down this path,” he said.

But he said he had been informed by a prominent council staff member that council had “no interest in Bli Bli as the area in question floods”.

SCN asked council to clarify its plans.

“The locations for other potential sites that will offer this diversity in the holiday park network are yet to be determined,” the council spokesperson stated.

So it remains unclear what sites council could consider and whether they are near Bli Bli.

There are several government-owned parcels of land in the Bli Bli area and in other rural areas on the Sunshine Coast that could be considered.

Council’s six coastal holiday parks are at at Dicky Beach, Mooloolaba Beach, Maroochydore Beach, Cotton Tree, Mudjimba Beach and Coolum Beach.
