A special version of one of the world’s most famous games has been unboxed for one of South-East Queensland’s historic towns.

A Monopoly board has been launched in Gympie, to celebrate the town’s unique role in the state’s history.

Mr Monopoly and a range of local representatives launched the game at the railway station.

The edition was first announced last year, prompting droves of locals to suggest what should appear on the board.

Now, the custom squares and cards have been revealed, and the game also features special gold tokens that players can incorporate into the game, paying tribute to the town’s rich gold mining roots, which provided a much-needed boost to the state economy in the 19th century.

Gympie mayor Glen Hartwig said the game covered many aspects of the town.

“Not every Australian city gets to have its own Monopoly board but as the town known for ‘saving Queensland’ we’re thrilled for Gympie to be honoured with its own edition,” he said.

The new edition of Monopoly celebrates an unlikely town.

“The newest edition captures everything that’s great about Gympie, from its nature to rich history.

“I can’t wait to bring an edition home to play with my family.”

Jaime-lee de Niet from Winning Moves, the maker of custom Monopoly boards, said the game was a celebration of the town.

“Gympie is famous amongst Australians as the city that saved Queensland and this edition is so special to us because we get to celebrate its rich history by immortalising everything that is iconic about the region,” she said.

“Popular hotspots like Goomeri and the Gympie Music Muster have made it onto the board, but we’ve also built in special gold tokens to make it a uniquely Gympie edition.

“So much thought and feedback went into this board, and we hope it’s one that locals can cherish it forever.”

The Monopoly game first hit shelves in 1935 and it has since been played by more than a billion people. The game is played in 114 countries.
