A Sunshine Coast distillery has received a golden gong at the World Vodka Awards, beating an international field with its signature drop.

Sunshine & Sons won the World’s Best award in the botanical vodka category with its Original Vodka brand, having previously beaten domestic rivals to contend at the UK-based global awards.

Veronika Karlova, chair of judges for the World Vodka Awards, said: “All World Vodka Award winners this year impressed judges with their quality and taste.

“Year-on-year we see an increase in World Vodka Awards entries for varietal, botanical and flavoured categories, which confirms that the future of vodka is leaning towards styles with a lot of character and flavour.”

The accolade came as the team behind Sunshine & Sons pack their bags for Europe where they will attend trade and industry events in Dusseldorf, London and Manchester.

They will also join Austrade for drinks industry networking as the Sunshine Coast-based business prepares to export internationally.

It was Sunshine & Sons’ Original Vodka brand that won over international judges.

“Industry acknowledgement is always a fantastic boost for any business and we are no exception,” Sunshine & Sons founder Matt Hobson said.

“Our team pours their heart and soul into producing quality spirits for people to enjoy with their loved ones.

“Now, with the backing of this accolade, we’re on a mission to take a slice of what we’re about to the Europeans and Brits.”

The award-winning Original Vodka is one of less than 5 per cent of vodkas globally that are produced from grapes, giving a soft, spongy and velvety texture that Mr Hobson says is unmistakably premium in comparison to traditional grain, sugar cane and potato vodkas.

The vodka is made with a filtration system unique to its natural location at Woombye.
