The Sunshine Coast is the newest region to be added to a series of rugby sevens tournaments for students.
More than 220 local students took to the fields at Brothers Rugby Club, Kawana, for a Brisbane Catholic Education Primary Schools Rugby 7s carnival.
Schools represented included Stella Maris School, Unity College, St Peter’s Catholic Primary School, St Thomas More Primary School, Our Lady of the Rosary, Siena Catholic Primary School and Good Samaritan Catholic College.
Games were traditionally held in Brisbane North, Brisbane South, and Brisbane West.
BCE School Operations and Programs Lead Greg Casey said BCE’s school rugby experience had grown in popularity since it started in 2019.
“Last year, we introduced the Gold Coast to the tournament, and this year, we are thrilled to have launched our first-ever Sunshine Coast carnival,” he said.
“The excitement was palpable on the day with our students displaying extraordinary talent and passion on the field.
“A lot of the success of the carnivals can be attributed to the Queensland Rugby Union’s support across the days, with the QRU providing coaching, referees, and first aid.
“The days are really about our students getting out there and having some fun with their school friends, building team and field skills, as well as emotional wellbeing.
“BCE is proud to provide a platform for students to showcase their skills and share their love for Rugby 7s.
“We remain committed to nurturing the next generation of Rugby 7’s players and promoting the importance of physical activity and sportspersonship.”
Carnivals are now held in five locations across the Archdiocese of Brisbane, with more than 1100 BCE students playing rugby across four divisions.

- Under-10 girls: Champions – Our Lady of the Rosary School Caloundra; Runners Up – St Peter’s Catholic Primary School.
- Under-10 boys: Champions – St Thomas More Primary School; Runners Up – Stella Maris School.
- Under-12 girls: Champions – Our Lady of the Rosary School; Runners Up – Stella Maris School.
- Under-12 boys: Champions – St Peter’s Catholic Primary School; Runners Up – Siena Catholic Primary School.
