The date for the opening celebration of a new park that is designed to “stimulate the imagination” has been announced, and it will coincide with seventh birthday festivities for its wider community.

Stockland Aura will celebrate the opening of Whale Park with a free public event on Saturday, May 27, from 11am to 3pm.

The opening brings the total number of parks in the Aura community to 18.

“The addition of Whale Park in Banya, which connects to the existing Aura Park Trail, provides another space for residents to gather, relax and play,” Stockland project director Josh Sondergeld said.

“The centrepiece of the park is the whale-themed playground, designed to stimulate the imagination and increase awareness of the local wildlife on the Sunshine Coast. The large whale play structure will provide an exciting new play landscape for children.”

Apart from the playground experience, Whale Park also has a basketball half-court, cycle loop, green space, barbecue facilities and an amenities block.

Playground designer Tobias Volbert from Urban Play, part of the creative force behind Whale Park, said he was delighted to bring another park to Aura.

“The park is the perfect place to bring the whole family and the whale play structure provides endless fun for children. There is something exciting for everyone,” he said.

The playground’s official opening event concludes Aura’s seventh birthday festivities and will feature roving sea creatures, a live DJ, a jellyfish-making workshop and a SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast display to learn about the creatures that live in our oceans.

Across the Sunshine Coast region, Stockland has delivered more than 50 parks and playgrounds, dog parks, walkable waterfronts and sports parks over the past two decades.

Upon completion, Aura will have about 200 kilometres of dedicated footpaths and bicycle pathways, setting a new benchmark for the provision of active transport communities across Queensland.

Whale Park is at the corner of Lady Elliot Street and Great Keppel Way in Banya.
