Drivers who use two key roads linking to the Bruce Highway are set for some relief, with service roads at a major upgrade site opening soon.

The jointly funded $301.25 million upgrade of the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road interchanges on the Bruce Highway has reached another key milestone, with the new eastern and western service roads set to open in full.

The service roads were partially opened in December, with work continuing to connect the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road interchanges on the eastern and western sides of the Bruce Highway respectively.

The new two-way roads will remove local traffic from the highway and improve access to the local business district as the project nears completion.

Both directions of the eastern service road are expected to open in the coming weeks, between Sandalwood Lane and the BP on Mons Road.

The western service road, known locally as Chevallum Road, will follow, with traffic able to travel in both directions between Mons Road and Leafy Lane.

The Maroochydore Road and Mons Road Interchange Project also includes active transport links for bike riders and pedestrians through the Maroochydore Road interchange onto the eastern service road.

The Australian Government has contributed $241m to the project, and the Queensland Government provided $60.25m.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said the extra safety this project delivered would be welcomed by locals, tourists and commuters.

“The two-way roads will get Forest Glen and Chevallum motorists to their destination sooner and safer with significant improvements delivered in safety and efficiency,” he said.

“We appreciate the public’s ongoing patience and cooperation while this important road project is in its final stages.”

State Minister for Regional Roads Bruce Saunders said the project was moving up a gear.

“We’re also delivering major projects like the $663 million Caboolture to Steve Irwin Way Bruce Highway upgrade, the $550 million Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade, and the $320 million Mooloolah River Interchange upgrade on the Sunshine Motorway,” he said.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said the Australian Government continued to invest in infrastructure projects to make roads safer and more efficient.

“This project will significantly increase capacity at the Mons Road and Maroochydore Road interchanges, and, more importantly, remove local traffic from the highway to get motorists home sooner and safer,” she said.

“It is part of our long-term partnership to upgrade the Bruce Highway, improving safety, flood resilience and capacity along the highway between Brisbane and Cairns.”
