A new key connection between regional food producers has begun, with Bonza launching its flights into Victoria.

Taking off from Sunshine Coast Airport on Tuesday bound for Avalon Airport, between Melbourne and Geelong, the inaugural flight was a chance for local businesses to showcase their products to the Victorian market.

On board the flight were local foodies and business representatives, from sauce makers to non-alcoholic cocktail brands, who were given an opportunity to collaborate with Victoria’s renowned food producers.

Upon touching down passengers were greeted and offered a range of local wines, coffee and food to enjoy.

Avalon Airport CEO Tony Brun said the airport was thrilled to partner with Bonza and host the first flight into Victoria.

“The route between Sunshine Coast and Melbourne (Avalon) is very popular and is fantastic for Victoria,” he said.

“We are proud to make flying easier and accessible for keen travellers.”

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Andrew Brodie said the additional 30,000 seats from Avalon would increase visors into the region and have a positive impact on local business.

He said the new route would make travel between the Sunshine Coast and Greater Melbourne, Geelong and the Bellarine more accessible and affordable.

“We know that Victorians love food and fresh produce, our beautiful beaches and breathtaking hinterland, and with the start of services from Melbourne (Avalon), more Victorians can discover and explore all our region has to offer,” he said.

“This new route is also great news for Sunshine Coast locals who love their sport or who want to spend time enjoying the incredible foodie culture that Melbourne is known for.”

Tuesday’s flight was also an opportunity for the rising stars at the North Shore Jets AFL club to promote a connection between sport in the two regions.

Flying three times a week, the Sunshine Coast to Avalon route is one of the 10 that have never been serviced before and is one of 13 destinations Bonza will service from its home base at Sunshine Coast Airport.

Bonza CEO Tim Jordan said the new service was also an opportunity to recognise the important partnerships and behind-the-scenes work of regional airports.

He thanked Mr Brodie and Mr Brun for their ongoing support of Bonza and dedication to providing these opportunities to travellers and local businesses.

“Today is absolutely the first step for us in terms of a long-term relationship, and a long-term partnership is what can be achieved between Avalon and Bonza,” Mr Jordan said.

“This will deliver something very different and something very beneficial for so many people across so many regional locations.

“It really does take partnerships between airports to make new routes happen … and we are about doing something different for the Australian aviation market.”

Bonza’s aircraft Bazza, which includes USB charging ports at all seats, serviced the first return trip to Victoria. It included members of the general public who secured a ticket for the historic flight.

Yesterday Bonza launched its first flight to Townville. The fourth route now means passengers can travel from the Sunshine Coast to Proserpine (Airlie Beach), Mackay, Avalon and Townsville.

On Thursday Bonza’s remaining routes will go on sale via the Fly Bonza app. This includes the Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Sunshine Coast and Tamworth to Sunshine Coast routes.
