A new-look base for marine operations is set to bolster safety for boat users on the Sunshine Coast.

Maritime Safety Queensland said it was a step closer to gaining a “one-stop-shop for maritime services” at its Mooloolaba Spit site.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the concept design for the revamped base should be finalised by April.

“The new staff office accommodation at the Mooloolaba Spit site is crucial not only for MSQ, but the Queensland Water Police and other departments operating in the area, such as Agriculture and Fisheries,” the Minister said.

“I’m excited to announce the tender to design the new office accommodation has been awarded to Brisbane-based architecture firm GroupGSA.”

The new office comes as part of the State Government’s $183 million maritime services investment, alongside projects like the Mooloolaba Harbour entrance dredging and bed levelling.

The Water Police base at Mooloolaba is set to be replaced.

“The base currently provides MSQ and Queensland Water Police direct access to waterways for mission critical activities,” Mr Bailey said.

“The concept design will be collaboratively developed with all agencies who will use the base,” he said.

“MSQ is leading the project and wants the new staff accommodation to provide a safe and secure site for all agencies who use the base now and in the future.

“Most importantly, the base plays a critical role in keeping Sunshine Coast boat users safe on the water.”

Mr Bailey said the new purpose-built infrastructure would replace the temporary offices on the site.

“MSQ has increased its presence on Sunshine Coast waterways, through deployment of its Maritime Enforcement Team,” he said.

“As MSQ continues to expand, a permanent and fit-for-purpose office solution is required.

“We are very pleased that a local business, that understands the operating environment and the significance of this development for the Mooloolaba community, has won this tender.”

Construction on the new staff office accommodation at the Mooloolaba Spit site should start later this year.
