The search for a young swimmer missing and feared drowned off the Sunshine Coast is proving extremely challenging.
Lifesavers, lifeguards, Water Police, the Police Dive Squad and Coast Guard resumed an operation early Sunday in a bid to locate a young Brisbane man, aged in his 20s.
He had not been sighted since getting into difficulty at unpatrolled Shelly Beach on Saturday afternoon.
However, recent rain and discharge from the nearby passage, creeks and stormwater drains has discoloured the water in the area, adding another layer of complexity to the operation.
Strong south-easterly winds also have arrived, creating choppy conditions.
A Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) spokesperson told Sunshine Coast News that visibility was extremely poor and making the search difficult.
The spokesperson said lifeguards and volunteers, including the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter, had been briefed on conditions and a search area mapped out.
A makeshift base has been set up at nearby Moffat Beach.
“They have a description of the missing man and what he was wearing, but the visibility is not good,” she said.
The missing man, aged in his 20s, entered the water with a friend at Shelly Beach on Saturday afternoon and was later seen “in distress”.
A member of the public dived in to help, but also was soon in trouble.
A 000 call was made to the Queensland Police Service, which alerted surf lifesavers about 3pm Saturday and a rescue was launched.
Dicky Beach and Metropolitan Caloundra (Kings Beach) clubs are the nearest patrolled locations.
One patient was retrieved by a lifeguard who responded and another was plucked out by an IRB crew from Dicky Beach SLSC. The third person could not be located.
Queensland Police said the missing swimmer was a 20-year-old Capalaba man.
“Preliminary enquiries indicate the man was swimming with a 20-year-old Ferny Hills man when they got into difficulties at around 3.15pm,” a spokesperson said.
Shelly Beach is mainly rock-lined and has two small sandy bays just south of Moffat Headland. Locals say that even on a seemingly calm day there can be much water movement, making it unsuitable for swimming.
The search continues.
