The mouth-watering donuts that those with a sweet tooth drive for hours to savour are finally coming to Mooloolaba.

Family-owned and operated Kenilworth Country Bakery has become a gastro-tourism icon for the Sunshine Coast hinterland town in just four years – thanks to its 1kg donuts and smaller, colourful varieties.

Plans are now well under way to open a second retail outlet at The Wharf Mooloolaba in January next year.

Owner and operator Jenna Sanders said it was time for the 97-year-old bakery, which was famous for selling up to 5000 donuts a day, to bring its popular pastries closer to the beach.

Nathan and Jenna Sanders are set to open Kenilworth Coastal Bakery at Mooloolaba.

“While we’ve had our challenges during COVID-19, we now feel those times are behind us and the time is right to spread our wings and there’s no better place than The Wharf Mooloolaba, which has been reinvigorated over the past few years with some amazing dining and retail outlets,” Jenna said.

“We really wanted to be in a tourist destination with strong foot traffic and The Wharf Mooloolaba is ideal as there’s lots of hustle and bustle with both tourists and locals alike visiting seven days a week. So, it makes a lot of sense for us to have a presence there.

“We’ve also strengthened our family connection, with my brother Nathan coming into the business to help from an operations and administration point of view, but my biggest challenge is securing staff.

“We have a number of bakers ready to start when the interstate borders open up but we’ll be looking to employ up to 25 full- and part-time staff including baristas, service staff, cleaners and even someone to help out with donut assembly.”

The Wharf Mooloolaba general manager Karen Hugg said she was thrilled to have such a popular and highly regarded business as Kenilworth Bakery located within the precinct.

“There will be a lot of excitement about this new tenant,” she said.

“People travel from all locations to sample Kenilworth’s incredible range of donuts, pies and they even have a 1kg sausage roll, as well as amazing coffee from Solid Ground.

“This will be a takeaway-only venue for the bakery so it’s ideal for people who want to grab and go or there’s plenty of public amenity for people to sit and enjoy a coffee and a donut or a pie and watch the passing parade.”
