A selection of young Sunshine Coast lifesavers have been invited to take part in a program designed to forge future leaders in the movement.

Sixteen locals will be among more than 50 of the state’s lifesaving prospects, included in the Youth Excellence Program at Lake Moogerah this weekend.

Surf Life Saving Queensland’s annual three-day program brings together the next generation of lifesavers, for various activities. They will be guided by a group of experienced leaders, mentors and guest speakers.

SLSQ Membership Services Coordinator Sandi Davis said the program provided the opportunity for like-minded lifesavers who aspired to be future leaders in the movement, to come together and expand their skills.

“These youths, aged 15 to 17, have been identified by their clubs for their ongoing passion and dedication,” she said.

“Our aim across the weekend is to further ignite their passion and equip them with a range of skills they can apply to all aspects of life.

“Attendees will undertake various problem-solving tasks and team-building exercises, which will be both mentally and physically challenging.”

Ms Davis said it was important for young lifesavers to be recognised for their contribution to the community, and to reaffirm their standing as shapers of their own future.

“Traditionally, the 15 to 17 years age group is where we begin to see a decline in membership as other interests and commitments tend to compete,” she said.

“This program has been designed to introduce selected young lifesavers to more formal roles such as patrol captain, as well as explore future pathways, to help aid member retention.

“Our participants represent the future of Surf Life Saving Queensland, and this program provides those participants with an integral opportunity to harness their passion so they hopefully remain involved in the movement for many years to come.”
