A new park in Nambour will provide a 1.7 hectare green boost for the hinterland town.

The $650,000 area, in Howard Street, will adjoin Quota Memorial Park and add to a network of parklands running through the heart of Nambour.

Stage one works start this week and will be ready for the community to enjoy by the start of September, weather and site conditions permitting.

Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said recreation parks were at the heart of the Sunshine Coast.

“We offer some of the most diverse landscapes in our parks and gardens from the hinterland to the coast,” Cr Suarez said.

“Our parks provide us with space for social, recreational and cultural activities, connecting us with nature and providing a huge variety of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

“Council is delivering on its Environment and Liveability Strategy (ELS), which provides long-term direction to guide growth and shape the future of our region.

“The new parkland area will extend Quota Park and enhance the overall Petrie Creek open space corridor that stretches from Arundell Avenue roundabout, also known as ‘Three Ways’, to Crusher Park just beyond the Nambour Showgrounds.”

The new park will provide a 1.7 hectare green boost for Nambour.

Divisional Councillor David Law said it would be the next exciting project to be delivered from the Petrie Creek Parklands Open Space Master Plan, which was endorsed by council in late 2017.

“This extension of welcoming outdoor creekside recreation space will build on Nambour’s family-friendly areas and will be a great addition for existing residents, visitors and new people set to call Nambour home,” Cr Law said.

“Footpaths will connect to Quota Memorial Park and the project will include lush landscaping, more seating and shaded picnic areas for the community to relax in and socialise, encouraging a healthy, smart and creative region.

“Sunshine Coast Council consulted with the community in 2018 on what they would like to see in the new park and one of the main requests was a dog off-leash area which will be a feature of the new parkland.”

Council has worked closely on the design of the park with Kabi Kabi First Nations representatives and with the Petrie Creek Catchment Group to incorporate their feedback for increased vegetation.

The project team will liaise with nearby residents and businesses throughout construction. For more information visit council’s Customer Contact page. For a full list of Sunshine Coast Council parks and playgrounds visit council’s Beaches and Parks Directory.
