Residents in these southern Sunshine Coast suburbs are now enjoying improved mobile phone reception, including 5G connectivity, thanks to the switching on of two new Telstra towers.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace, who advocated with Telstra for construction of the towers, welcomed their activation.

Mr Wallace said the towers were terrific news for residents in Baringa and Glenview, who had been struggling to get the connectivity they need for years.

“I started receiving complaints from local residents in Baringa about their lack of mobile phone reception almost as soon as the suburb’s first houses were built,” he said.

“I have been pushing Telstra to get this sorted for nearly two years,” Mr Wallace said.

The towers are located at 469 Old Caloundra Rd, Glenview, and in the land east of Baringa State Secondary School in Baringa.

They will ensure consistent 5G coverage across the Aura development, Bells Creek, Meridan Plains and Glenview.

“When new homes are built here on the Coast we must see the telecommunications infrastructure in place to cater for them,” Mr Wallace said.

“I am pleased that Telstra has responded to my advocacy and the community’s needs and brought 5G to our region.”

5G mobile technology permits large downloads to be completed in seconds, along with seamless streaming of multi-media content and even real-time online gaming on mobile.

It can deliver many times the capacity in the network compared to 4G allowing for a range of new business applications.

“We have all got a new appreciation for the importance of online connectivity during the COVID pandemic,” Mr Wallace said.

“However, for our local businesses to thrive it is going to be vital,” he said.

“I want to see the southern and central Sunshine Coast become a hub for new industries like high tech manufacturing, healthcare and defence and in the 21st century those businesses need the fastest possible internet speeds, wherever they are.

“5G connectivity for our region is a big step forward for Sunshine Coast businesses.”
