Kawana Thunder were involved in a thrilling Queensland Premier League encounter with the highly-credentialed Tweed Ospreys to complete their home games on Sunday.

The Ospreys were privileged to be in a position to present some of Australia’s current and past best bowlers.

These included multiple state, Australian and world title holders of many disciplines, including Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow and Wayne Turley.

Turley, a previous NSW representative, spent many years at the strong Taren Point Bowls Club prior to moving to the Tweed Heads Bowls Club as bowls co-ordinator.

Included in Kawana’s opposition were up-and-coming younger players Chloe Stewart (No, 3 in Australia), Nick Cahill (a previous Kawana player and reigning Sunshine Coast singles champion of champions) and Kira Bourke, who is in the Australia emerging squad.

State and Australian representative Lynsey Clarke, the former national caption, was also playing.

Kawana jumped to the lead early, playing bowls of the highest quality.

Their lead was maintained for most of the day, until the last end of the match.

Going into the last end The Thunder and The Ospreys were tied at 54-all and some fantastic last end bowls kept the large crowd enthralled before the Ospreys finally gained the upper hand and won the end by two shots.

Kawana plays the last round at Hamilton next week, in a must-win game to have any chance to make the finals.

Results: Ryan Burnett def Kelvin Kerkow 24-19, Brett Wilkie def by Peter Taylor 14-18, Kurt Brown def by Wayne Turley 16-19. Tweed Ospreys 56 Kawana Thunder 54.
