Ways to reduce congestion and improve safety at one of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest intersections are being investigated.

The community and key stakeholders are being invited to have their say on possible short and long-term solutions at the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road intersection.

State Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey issued a press release on Tuesday saying planning will address booming growth in new and emerging communities, including Caloundra South (Aura) and Palmview (Harmony).

The second round of consultation will allow the community to review the proposed solutions, following the first phase completed in November 2021.

Improvements proposed in the first round include a signalised intersection to reduce congestion and improve travel times.

Traffic signals would be compatible with a longer-term, grade-separated, north-south overpass solution, and make up part of a future ramp from Bells Creek Arterial Road onto Caloundra Road when the second stage of improvements are built.

State Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said the area was packed with traffic and he was looking forward to works starting.

“Anyone who’s used the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road intersection knows it can get busy at the best of times, so moving closer to getting this important upgrade underway is great news,” he said.

“The first stage of improvements will focus on reducing congestion, while longer-term upgrades will look at forming a new north-south connection from the Sunshine Motorway to the Bruce Highway.

“I encourage anyone wanting to have their say on these upgrades to do so.”

The project forms part of the Southern Sunshine Coast Roads Improvement Study, to which the Federal Government has committed $5 million.

The project will combine as part of a future north–south, intra-regional motorway spine.

Design and construction will be subject to future funding availability in consideration of competing statewide priorities.

Feedback is invited until February 16. For more information and to have your say, visit Transport and Main Roads – Projects.
