The Queensland Government’s decision to overrule Sunshine Coast Council regarding a coastal development application has triggered responses from a number of Sunshine Coast News readers.

Development is a touchy issue as the region, along with much of Australia, is enduring a shortage of houses and rentals, which in turn is causing considerable stress among those seeking a permanent roof over their heads.

Here are some recent thoughts about the issues in the community:

Housing Stress

The housing/rental crisis will not be solved by allowing developers to build more high-rises and have smaller blocks – we aren’t short of land.

Developers are only interested in profits, not in any housing/rental crisis.

What they are building is out of the reach of most home seekers.

Council could ease the rental burden by increasing the rates on AirB&B properties (responsible for so many vacant homes) and using the extra revenue from Airbnb to discount rates for properties offered for long-term rental.

Council vs Qld Govt

Who could be surprised by this State governments arrogant disregard for the wishes of the Residents of Buddina and the values and ideals expressed by our Sunshine Coast Council?

Just another nail in the Labor State Government’s coffin.

Sunshine Coast ruined?

As a born and bred Sunshine Coast resident of almost 60 years, I am appalled at what the Sunshine Coast has turned in to.

It is well and truly time that the state govt butts out of Local govt decisions and wishes of residents.  It has become a “Develop at any cost” attitude and stuff what the residents want!  And now it’s being hidden under the guise of the housing crisis.

My husband and I took 45 mins to get home from Maroochydore – a trip that should take about 12 mins.

There is no infrastructure to cope with any more people!  They have turned this once beautiful, ideallic and wonderful place to live into a shambles.

We already have a local council who is doing a good job at that.  It really is heartbreaking.

Time to get rid of ALL politicians and get people in who care about the residents, not lining their own pockets.

Support for Mayor

What Ted O’Brien intended as an insult, calling Mayor Jamieson a “Labor Mayor,” was in my opinion a great compliment.

Breakaway hinterland council

I strongly support the creation of a new Hinterland Council based west of the highway.

We have a completely different dynamics and requirements from the Sunshine Coast area.
