It’s time to hit the beach or get the mowing and washing done before the Sunshine Coast sees a return of some wet and cooler weather.

The Bureau is predicting a trough over the northwest to extend into the southwest and deepen during Monday before moving east. Another trough may develop off the east coast mid week and both bring the potential for some downpours.

Tuesday will be partly cloudy with a medium (40 per cent) chances of showers, most likely in the afternoon and we will see light northeasterly winds about 15 to 20km/h.

BOM meteorologist Rosa Hoff told sunshinecoastnews.com.au that a trough from inland parts was expected to move eastwards and bring the chance of showers and rain as the week progressed.

Ms Hoff said there was a chance of up to 10mm falling Tuesday, 10-30mm Wednesday and up to 20mm on New Year’s Eve.

She said the traditional party evening would bring a 50 per cent chance of showers up until midnight.

“Maximums will be 28C to 29C, but they will dip for Wednesday (26C).

New Year’s Day will see the possibility of showers drop to 60 per cent and possible sprinkles of 2-10mm and a top of 28C.

For surfers, the swell is tipped to build to 2m from Thursday with southeast winds strengthening. This will bring the more protected spots of Moffat Headland, Pt Cartwright, Alexandra Headland and the Noosa points into play and these conditions could hang in there for two to three days.

Until then, strong northerlies and 1m of easterly swell will persist and Happy Valley at Caloundra and the Kawana pocket appear the best options.
