Surf lifesavers from around Queensland converged for the inaugural Hayden Kenny Classic at Alexandra Headland over the weekend.

A host of talented athletes raced for big prizemoney at the Shaw and Partners-sponsored event, which was named in honour of a surf sports pioneer.They competed amid picture perfect conditions, with a punchy shore break.

Athletes competed in ski, swim, board, ironman and team races, across the under-15, under-17 and open divisions.

Maroochydore young gun Tiarnee Massie celebrated an emotional win, finishing ahead of Northcliffe duo Georgia Miller and Harriet Brown.“I have always looked up to Georgia and she is my inspiration,” she said. “To win against such an amazing field means the world to me. I am seriously so happy right now.”

She won $10,000 as a result.

The host club won a thrilling mixed Taplin relay, after Cam Guthrie out-sprinted Northcliffe’s Matt Bevilacqua.

The event and the series are supported by Shaw and Partners. The series heads to North Bondi for the next event, on January 7-8. It will return to the Sunshine Coast for the Murphy Homes Maroochy Classic on January 21-22.
