A World War Two artillery shell has been found and destroyed on a Sunshine Coast beach after a late-night emergency response.
The unexploded ordnance was found just before midnight on Saturday, a Defence spokesperson said.
“Defence can confirm an unexploded ordnance, identified as a 25 Pound High Explosive projectile (25 Pounder) from World War Two, was found on Wurtulla Beach.”
Specialists from the Australian Defence Force’s Joint Explosive Ordnance Support – South Queensland team attended after a request for assistance from Queensland Police.
Defence said the projectile was assessed and safely disposed of at the beach using standard procedures.
According to its website, Defence defines unexploded ordnance as ammunition which has been fired but has not functioned as designed and warns it can remain dangerous, particularly if disturbed.
