A garden centre that has sold plants and supplies for years while supporting young people with disability and autism will soon shut.
The Steps Garden Centre at Caloundra, which has provided workplace training for Steps Pathways College students and directed proceeds to its programs, will close on October 30.
However, Steps will continue plant sales, along with horticulture training and a new program of workshops, at nearby Cafe on George.
Steps Social Business CEO Stephanie Patey said Steps was proud of the impact the centre has made and grateful to the community that supported it every step of the way.
“We know this news will be disappointing for many people, and we share those feelings,” she said.
“The Steps Garden Centre has always been much more than a place to buy plants. It has been a place where people could learn, contribute, connect with others and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
“That legacy has only been possible because of the incredible support of our community every step of the way.”
“I would like to thank the many community members, customers, volunteers and supporters who have been part of the Garden Centre’s journey.
“Every purchase, visit and contribution has helped support our social enterprise and create opportunities that have made a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with disability and autism.”

Steps planned to further develop Cafe on George as the heart of a vibrant food, garden and community precinct, creating new opportunities for connection, learning and social impact.
Community members were encouraged to visit the garden centre before its closure to stock up on plants and gardening supplies, reconnect with familiar faces and enjoy coffee or lunch at Cafe on George.
