Ask a Kindy teacher what matters most before Prep and they rarely say letters or numbers.
They will say: “Talking.”
Talking is how a four-year-old joins a game, asks for help, sorts out a disagreement and tells you what happened at Kindy.
Here is a rule of thumb you can use tonight at home.
By four, a stranger at the shops should understand almost everything your child says.
At three, about three-quarters.
If you are still translating for your child, that is worth a conversation.
Some children catch up.
The tricky part is that nobody can pick who will catch up just from the outside.
The Kindy year is the window where support does the most work for the least effort.
A check-in costs you 20 minutes and often ends in reassurance.
