A crime scene has been declared and police are investigating after a woman arrived at a Sunshine Coast hospital with a gunshot wound.
The Queensland Police Service stated that officers were alerted to reports a 19-year-old had presented to Nambour Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her hand on Wednesday night, at about 11.30pm.
Initial inquiries indicate the woman and a 19-year-old man were sitting inside a vehicle outside an Image Flat Road residence when they were approached by unknown persons in a dark coloured vehicle.
A shot was then reportedly fired from the car, before it left the scene.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
Detective Senior Sergeant Robert Lowry said initial inquiries indicated that there was “an interaction and a single gunshot has been fired into the victim’s vehicle”.
“Naturally, that’s a serious concern that we’re looking into and we’re seeking some public assistance and any information that anyone has in relation to that incident.”
He said the area and the vehicle that “was shot into” had been examined and the two 19-year-olds were speaking to police.
“We’re still assessing their version and where that sits in the scheme of things,” he said.
He said police were assessing whether the incident is “an ongoing threat to the community” but said: “I’m seeing that it is not an ongoing threat, but that’s always under assessment and we’ll see where that moves.”
He said the woman was in “reasonably good spirits but undergoing further treatment”.
