Consultation has opened on a proposal to build a public housing development on the Sunshine Coast.
The proposed development is located at 230 Main Road, Maroochydore, and consists of one three-storey building containing 19 dwellings.
It is made up of 18 one-bedroom units and one one-bedroom unit with office space.
The project is being progressed by the state government through the Department of Housing and Public Works and features 10 car parking spaces, including nine standard car parks and one accessible space.
Plans show the proposed building would have a maximum height of 12.38 metres, with the section fronting Main Road designed as two storeys with a height of 9.13 metres.
Some community members have already responded to the proposal, with concerns raised about potential traffic and safety impacts.
One resident posting in the Maroochydore Community Notice Board said the area was already experiencing congestion.
“That road is already a mess at school pick up/drop off, it’s the route to the bus stop, and there’s always cars parked along it which makes visibility pretty bad already,” they said.
“Add 19 more households worth of cars into that mix and I can’t see how it doesn’t get worse, especially with kids walking or riding bikes to the bus stop or schools.”

Other residents welcomed the proposal, with Carly Ellis expressing support for more public housing in an online comment.
“Good to see some public housing finally being built. We have a desperate need for it and the ‘affordable housing’ model with community partners isn’t working for anyone but investors,” she wrote.
The consultation period runs until Wednesday, August 5.
The department will review feedback received during the consultation period and consider any design changes before the Director-General decides whether the project can proceed.
