A large decades-old Australia Post complex on the Sunshine Coast is set to shut down.

The Nambour Delivery Centre, which stretches across a 1.8ha site along Perwillowen Road in Burnside, will close in coming months.

The precinct, also known as the Australia Post Sunshine Coast Business Centre, will essentially be replaced by a new parcel facility at Caloundra.

Australia Post head of Last Mile Queensland Andrew Lowe said the new facility, under construction at Corbould Park, will be more suitable.

“Australia Post is opening its new purpose-built Sunshine Coast Parcel Facility later this year to ensure we can continue to support growing parcel demand on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“The new facility is a multimillion-dollar investment that will significantly increase parcel processing capacity.

“It will have the ability to process up to 60,000 parcels per day, improve safety and efficiency, and provide a modern workplace as the region continues to grow.

“As a result, the Nambour Delivery Centre will close when our new facility opens.”

Mr Lowe said the old complex was a well-known local landmark, but its time was coming to an end.

“While we have loved operating in Nambour for the past 45 years, we must continue to expand capacity and enhance our service offerings to compete in the rapidly evolving eCommerce landscape,” he said.

“As the community shifts and grows, this investment (at Caloundra) supports us to continue serving our customers and meet operational needs.”

There will be no job losses.

“All team members will transition to the upgraded parcel facility, and we expect to continue growing operations and workforce in the region,” Mr Lowe said.

It’s understood Australia Post is considering its options for the Perwillowen property and is expected to provide an update later in the year.

Nambour still has an Australia Post shop at Lowe Street.
