A state-of-the-art garbage truck has been rolled out to overcome unforgiving terrain at a world heritage-listed Queensland island.
Waste management company Remondis Australia has deployed a bespoke million-dollar machine to collect rubbish at K’gari, north of the Sunshine Coast.
A company media release stated that that the vehicle was one of Australia’s most complex and advanced waste management trucks, custom-made to traverse a challenging landscape.
The Iveco Astra 8-wheel-drive front-lift truck with a Superior Pak body has recently started operating, to collect campsite waste on behalf of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
Remondis Australia bulk logistics and remediation operations manager Andy Heironymus said the company had gone all out to ensure the truck could efficiently retrieve rubbish with the utmost care for the environment.
“We pride ourselves on devising tailor-made waste management solutions across the globe, and this is up there with the best,” he said.
“K’gari is known for breathtaking natural beauty, but a lot of people wouldn’t know how difficult it is to move a truck across an area where mother nature can be ruthless.
“We’re talking about the world’s biggest sand island, with powdery sand, irregular terrain and rocks that would strand or ruin any standard truck. It’s also a high-salt environment with extreme weather patterns producing violent storms and flash flooding.
“That’s why our truck has special features including advanced rust protection, wide wheels and automatic tyre pressure variation technology for transitioning between different surfaces. Advanced satellite communication gear is installed because of the island’s limited connectivity.”
Ground operations fall to Remondis Australia specialist driver Mick McMahon, who has decades of waste sector collection and management experience, including locally.
Mr McMahon has undergone advanced training to familiarise with the truck and master the many logistical challenges.
“Collecting waste from the island is light years beyond driving along sealed suburban roads,” he said.

“That includes getting the truck from our mainland depot to Inskip, where it’s put on a barge and ferried to the island, up to four days a week.
“It’s essential to cooperate with QPWS and be flexible to ensure we’re working in with differing on and off-peak demand periods.
“Safety, environmental protection and time management is always in mind as I get to the many collection points and tend to spot requirements, such as removing waste left on beaches. There are all sorts of contingencies, which can include staying a night if bad weather results in delays or safety risks.
“The truck also needs to be washed down many times a week to avoid rust setting in.
“It’s a lot of work, but a privilege and honour to be tasked with looking after such a stunning location.”
Remondis Australia has entered into a long-term partnership with QPWS to conduct the island’s waste management operations.
In addition to servicing K’gari, arrangements also cover waste collection from Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area and Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park.
