A landmark one-off surfing event will be held to celebrate a surfing club’s longevity.

The ‘Island Challenge’ will be held at Mudjimba Island to mark Mudjimba Boardriders Club’s 40th anniversary.

The event will recognise decades of community, competition and coastal culture.

It will be the first time a competitive event of this kind has been staged at the iconic offshore break.

All Sunshine Coast boardriders clubs have been invited to compete in the teams-based competition, for a $5000 prize pool and bragging rights.

Given the unique offshore location, the event will be highly dependent on favourable swell direction, size and weather conditions so it will have a window from March 1 to April 26, with the final call made 48 hours before the predicted optimal conditions, so it is similar in concept to the renowned Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in Hawaii.

Club president Brendan Wulf issued a media release stating the significance of the meet.

“Hosting an event at Mudjimba Island is something we have always envisioned, and our 40th year provides the perfect opportunity to bring it to life,” it stated.
