Two former students of Caloundra State School are giving back to their community by volunteering to teach students in an award-winning dance excellence program.

All students at the school have the opportunity to participate in dance as part of its support of creative arts.

Former students Madison Randl and Noah Bell were Cultural Captains at the school and have continued their love of dance into their high school years.

Madison competed in a performing arts competition in 2015, winning $2000 for the school.

With Madison’s support the funding helped establish a Dance Excellence Performance Team, CalStars and the training team, CalSquad.

Madison is now in Year 12 and volunteering to teach a competition routine for the team, having already choreographed and taught an award-winning contemporary team in 2019.

Noah, now in Year 7, regularly gives up his mornings to assist with the choreography and teaching of CalCrew (Hip Hop) competition routines, having been part of both the CalStars and later formed, CalCrew since Year 3.

Caloundra State School Principal Stephen Logan said the Dance Excellence Program provided opportunities for participation, fun, growth and performance for all students from Prep to Year 6.

“We have seen the difference our dance programs make in so many ways for all children who attend our school.”

“For some, dance will be something they love, for others it may be something new and open up possibilities, encourage them to come to school with a spring in their step and allow them to experience something fun and different.

“Each class from Prep to Year 6 in Term 3 prepares its own dance to a different theme each year, culminating in a community showcase, Caloundra State School’s Dance Extravaganza.”

More than 300 students have participated in the high performance teams at Caloundra State School.

A purpose-built Performing Arts Centre is in the planning stages and will provide the school community with a 600-800 seat performance theatre, made possible with a recent State Government commitment of $3.2 million.

Caloundra State School students will compete in their first competition for the year at the upcoming Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod.

Caloundra State School is currently accepting enrolments of students in all year levels from Prep to Year 6 and more information is available via the school website www.caloundrass.eq.edu.au
