A man remains in intensive care after an alleged assault on Ocean Street, Maroochydore.

Police say at about 12.13am on January 17, two groups of people became involved in an altercation in the restaurant and nightclub precinct.

During the incident, a 21-year-old man was allegedly punched and knocked to the ground, sustaining significant head injuries.

Queensland Ambulance Service told SCN the man was transported in a potentially life-threatening condition to Sunshine Coast University Hospital following the alleged assault.

Queensland Police said due to the severity of his injuries, the man was later airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care.

QP confirmed three men are assisting with enquiries as investigations into the serious assault continue.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have relevant vision from the area at the time to come forward.
