Di Pethers took this spectacular photo at Kings Beach of a ‘fallstreak hole’ or ‘hole-punch cloud’.

Higgins Storm Chasing posted to social media about the phenomenon: “The holes are caused by supercooled water in the clouds suddenly evaporating or freezing and then falling, and may be triggered by passing aircraft flying through the clouds. This leaves a circular or elliptical hole shape in the clouds.

“At the same time, sunlight interacts with the ice crystals. The arrangement of these ice crystals refracts the sunlight, splitting it into colours and producing the appearance of a localised rainbow within the hole.”
