Plans are afoot for an all-abilities access ramp at a popular beach as Sunshine Coast Council undertakes to make it accessible to all.

The new ramp will be built next to the Coolum Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Tickle Park.

It will provide easier and safer beach access for people of all abilities, ages and mobility levels – including those using wheelchairs and mobility aids.

Division 9 councillor Maria Suarez said current access was limited to stairs or two steep vehicle access ramps.

“The new ramp will also enhance the existing accessible beach program, which offers beach matting, wheelchairs and life jackets free of charge,” Cr Suarez said.

“This project is a significant step toward a more inclusive Sunshine Coast where everyone can participate equally, contribute fully and feel a sense of belonging.”

Sunshine Coast Council is calling for community feedback on the new ramp.

The ramp aims to be Disability Discrimination Act compliant and integrate seamlessly with the top of the walkway and car park to allow direct access to the water.

It will be 2m wide, have a durable aluminium frame and feature timber and concrete finishes.

The lower section has been designed to allow the all-abilities and wheelchair beach matting to attach at various points to account for varying beach levels throughout the year.

The nearby car park will also be relined to include four to five accessible parking bays, complementing the existing accessible toilets and amenities in the area.

Mayor Rosanna Natoli said our beaches should be able to be enjoyed by everyone.

“This ramp will help break down barriers and ensure that more people can enjoy a day in the sun, surf and sand regardless of their physical ability or mode of transport,” she said.

The community is invited to view council plans and share their ideas for improvements until consultation closes July 11.

The council said construction costs would be guided by the final design.

The project is being undertaken in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Southeast Queensland Community Stimulus Program.
