One of Australia’s largest telecommunications companies has shut the doors to a Sunshine Coast store.

Optus closed its Nambour Plaza outlet earlier this month, prompting an outcry from some locals on social media.

An Optus spokesperson confirmed it had “closed permanently”.

“This is a difficult decision we have had to make, but Optus remains committed to supporting Nambour locals stay connected,” they said.

“Customers can visit us in store at Caloundra, Noosa, Morayfield or any of our Sunshine Coast stores.

“Optus customers can also manage their services, chat with an Optus expert and shop in My Optus app 24/7.”

But the spokesperson did not reveal why the store closed.

The shop had offered a variety of services related to telecommunications and technology including mobile phones and accessories, internet and broadband, mobile plans, customer support and device repairs.

The closure sparked angst from some customers and debate among locals.

“They forget about the seniors who still rely on these services,” Michelle Somers said via the Living in Nambour Facebook group.

Megan Paull said: “That’s a pain. I like to go into the shop to sort out my tech stuff. I am youngish and do online shopping and such, but with my phone stuff, I like the shop.”

John Mcgovern said: “I will be changing (providers).”

Others said the closure was a sign of the times, particularly in Nambour.

“Retail is dying here and has been for many years. We don’t have the population,” Roger Spencer said.

Marissa Morry Conlon said: “They weren’t getting customers, so they weren’t needed.”

Wes King said: “We need to get used to the change in the retail sector. With the increase in online shopping, shop fronts are just not needed for some of the retail sector.”

Former Optus store customers at Nambour can use the MyOptus app or go to another store on the Sunshine Coast.

Optus has four other stores in the greater area, at Maroochydore, Kawana, Caloundra and Noosa.

Telco giant Telstra has a store within Nambour Plaza and at Maroochydore, Kawana, Caloundra and Noosa. It also has a giant exchange building in the heart of Nambour.

Nambour Plaza centre management was contacted for comment.
