Catching an NFL football that has been dropped from 230 metres above Sunshine Coast Stadium is the latest Guinness Book of Records challenge set to be undertaken by local media identity Steve Hirst.

In October 2022, the Sunshine Coast manager of Southern Cross Austereo broke a record by pushing a lawnmower 107.5km around the stadium over a 24-hour period.

This year he’s chosen to undertake a task that is slightly less strenuous but he is still firmly focused on the goal of raising important funds for Inclusive Kids (IFYS).

Mr Hirst said the current record for the highest-altitude catch of an American football stands at 221.89 metres, which is held by Carlton Aussie rules great Brendan Fevola.

The ball is expected to be travelling up to 200km/h when it reaches him.

“It do feel a little bit bad about trying to take the record from ‘Fev’ as I am a mad Carlton supporter and really enjoyed watching him play footy, but IFYS is a charity close to my heart and I’m passionate about sport and the power it brings to children so all the funds raised will be directed towards the Inclusive kids grass-roots sports program,” Mr Hirst said.

“The support from the local community has been incredible.

“I haven’t set a fundraising total as I don’t want to restrict myself in what can be achieved, all donations are welcome online or on the day.”

IFYS marketing manager Paul Morton said Mr Hirst’s commitment to support the work his organisation undertakes for Sunshine Coast youth was remarkable.

“Steve raised over $70,000 from his lawnmowing event and while he may not raise a similar amount this time around, his ability to put the work we do on the map and the funds he will raise is simply sensational,” Mr Morton said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing him break another world record.”

Donations can be made via Inclusive Kids.
