A long-standing local water sports equipment business at a high-profile location has announced “with a heavy heart” it is closing.
Daniele Giannatempo from Viking Kayak and SUP, located on Nicklin Way at Warana, posted to social media on Tuesday afternoon announcing it would shut on May 24.
The business has operated for 15 years and its website says it offers paddle, pedal and motor-powered kayaks plus stand-up paddleboards, water bikes, accessories and more.
It says it is the only kayak shop in Australia to have an indoor test pool.
“After many years of dedicated service, the owners have made the difficult decision to permanently shut the shop’s doors,” read the post from “Daniele and the Team”.
“This decision comes a few years after the sale of the esteemed Viking kayak brand, marking the end of an era for our beloved establishment.
“Since our inception in 2009, Viking Kayak and SUP has been a cornerstone of the local community, providing top-notch service and quality products to outdoor enthusiasts far and wide.
“Over the years, myself, Daniele, and our exceptional staff have had the pleasure of meeting countless individuals and forming lasting connections with our customers.
“As we prepare to say goodbye, we can’t help but reminisce on the countless memories and experiences shared within these walls. From exhilarating fishing kayak adventures to tranquil stand-up paddleboard excursions, each interaction has left an indelible mark on our hearts.
“While the decision to close our doors was not an easy one, we are immensely grateful for the support and patronage of our loyal customers throughout the years. Your unwavering enthusiasm for our products and services has been the driving force behind our success, and for that, we are truly thankful.
“As we embark on this final chapter, we invite you to join us in celebrating the legacy of Viking Kayak and SUP. Whether you’ve been a long-time customer, a dedicated staff member or simply a friend of the shop, your presence has enriched our journey beyond measure.”
The store is now preparing for a clearance sale with $240,000 of stock to be sold, with many products under cost.
“This event isn’t just about scoring fantastic bargains; it’s also a chance for us to express our gratitude to the community that has supported us throughout the years,” the post said.
“We’ve cherished every moment spent serving you, and now, as we close this chapter, we want to celebrate with all of you in style.
“As we embark on this final chapter, we hope that our shared experiences and memories will serve as inspiration for years to come.”
The post quickly attracted comments paying tribute to the store.
“I fondly remember being welcomed in with my dog to test a range of boards in the pool. You guys are legends. All the best to the team,” one post read.
Another said: “Sad day. VK&S have always been a big supporter of our kayak fishing community.”
Viking Kayaks was started out of a small shed in New Zealand in 1999 by Grant Montague. Its factory in Matamata, near Hamilton, was gutted by fire in January 2022.
The brand was sold to another company and Viking Australia is now located on the Central Coast.
It’s understood warranties will still be covered by Viking Australia.
