The Sunshine Coast looks set to avoid any significant impact from Tropical Cyclone Niran as it tracks away from Queensland, but some interesting surf conditions may develop this weekend.
The Bureau and weather forecasters say two swells – one coming from the northeast linked to Niran and another from the south generated by a powerful low pressure system – will converge.
The N-NE swell is expected be between 1-1.5m and the S-SE swell bigger, more powerful and with a longer swell period, building from 1.5-2.5m Saturday to 2-3m offshore on Sunday.
With 15-25 knot southeasterly winds predicted and swell from two angles, this could be create quite lumpy and bumpy conditions for those looking for a swim or surf.
The north facing beaches of Mooloolaba and Noosa will offer the most protection from the winds and the larger waves so will be the pick for swimmers.
For surfers, inside Moffat, Pt Cartwright, Alexandra Headland and Noosa’s bays will be the best bets.
Tides have returned to closer to normal levels after large tides last weekend caught a number of swimmers out due to the power of the outgoing tide.
Noosa this weekend plays host to some surf sports action with masters competitors turning out for the Quick Fire event.
Noosa Heads SLSC is also hosting its Seahorse nippers program, which caters for young children with disabilities that prevent them from taking part in a full nipper program.
Seahorse nippers will take to the sand and experience flag races, swimming, surfing and kayaking in a happy and safe red and yellow environment.
Noosa Heads SLSC has pioneered this program and does an amazing job providing an opportunity for the youngsters to enjoy the beach while socialising and gaining confidence in the water.
